A new book just out this fall, entitled ROBLOX Building Guide, demonstrates just how young today’s budding video game builders are. The book was written by an eighteen year old (for the sake of full disclosure let me gloat — he’s my son!) and is intended for an audience that’s mostly in the eight to eighteen age range, but this book is far from watered down.  It is filled with nuts and bolts information about the CAD style tools that the platform makes available to create virtual worlds.

The ROBLOX platform itself is quite noteworthy. Created by a small band of software developers who first made their mark creating physics engines for educational software, they soon realized the physics engine was more fun for making games than for teaching, and set about creating the platform. The result is the ROBLOX web site (www.roblox.com) where anyone can not only play the games, but also create new online video games, all for free. Currently there are tens of thousands of games available to play, and several million registered users.

The great thing about ROBLOX is that the platform addresses parents’ chief concern about their kids and video games: They spend all their time mindlessly playing. Sure, lots of kids do nothing more than play ROBLOX, but for anyone who takes an interest, there is a highly creative, highly engaging, and highly educational aspect to the platform as well: Making your own games.

ROBLOX Building Guide is a must-have resource for anyone interested in ROBLOX. Intended for reading by school-age kids, it takes them step by step through process of getting started and creating their own online worlds, each of which — despite the basic Lego-like look of ROBLOX — can have a completely different look and feel. The book is currently available on Amazon here, and makes a great gift for any budding young video game designers!
