Tokyo — eSOL, a leading developer of real-time embedded software solutions, announced recently that its eCR OS integrated software platform has been selected by Sharp Corporation for its two new AQUOS hybrid photo players. eCROS is an out-of-the-box software platform that features robust real-time operating systems (RTOSes), middleware, development tools, and comprehensive professional services. eCROS drastically reduces the time and cost of preparing software development platforms, and helps engineers concentrate on creating differentiated, compelling upper-layer applications and optimizing software quality.

AQUOS photo players (model numbers HN-PP100 and HN-PP150) enable users to print or display images taken with their cell phones or digital cameras. Users can display photos for playback over a large-screen HDTV, add background music for slideshow options, or print their favorite photos. Photo images can be loaded onto the player via either memory cards (SD, SDHC, MMC, Memory Stick, and CompactFlash) or USB2.0, or by high-speed infrared communication (IrSS) transfer. In addition, HN-PP150 is network-capable. Users can enjoy sharing photos with their family and friends through Picasa Web Album (a photo-sharing web service), or can print/display images directly from a PC or an external hard drive in a home network that has DLNA server capability.

The eCROS software platform for the AQUOS photo players features a µITRON4.0-based RTOS (PrKERNELv4), development tools ( eBinder), file systems including media drivers for SD memory card/Memory Stick, and USB host stack. The PrKERNELv4 RTOS offers a superior user experience within an optimal, stress-free operating environment; for example, it provides faster boot-up time and a quick response to each task request. The file systems enable read, write, and management capabilities for image files stored on memory cards or digital cameras. The USB host stack provides data transfer services between USB-connected devices such as digital cameras. eBinder tools enable efficient, effective, high-quality software development because they are designed specifically for the development and debugging of complex RTOS-based embedded systems.

eCROS is an integrated software platform comprising two optional RTOSes (T-Kernel or ITRON — the two most frequently used RTOSes in Japan), development tools, middleware, and professional services. With eCROS, engineers can quickly customize their software platform by choosing the appropriate RTOS, middleware, and services. And, because eCROS components come already integrated and verified, engineers can focus instead on upper-layer application development. Time spent building and tuning a particular software platform also can be shortened by utilizing professional services, including RTOS porting, customization, and device driver/application development.

“We are pleased that Sharp has chosen eCROS for their AQUOS photo player.”, said Nobuyuki Ueyama, the Executive Vice President of eSOL Co., Ltd. “eCROS is the best software platform solution for developing the large-scale, highly advanced software required in the latest digital consumer electronics devices. eCROS also has a terrific track record of reliability and high quality with developers of automotive devices and other products, in addition to consumer electronics. We will continue to provide products and services that will help developers expedite embedded software development of rapidly evolving digital electronics.”
